EnvironFocus presents a 2-Day Webinar on Climate Action in a Developing Economy. It will cover developing a Climate Action plan, highlighting the challenges faced, especially in a developing country. Challenges include Human Capacity gaps. Lack of political commitments, vested interest in coal and oil, Finance, etc. The case study will focus on energy, transport, and waste in Lagos State. It will highlight opportunities available to an organization interested in investing. It will also discuss waste and circular economy from an entrepreneurial perspective.

Lagos, sometimes referred to as Lagos State to distinguish it from Lagos Metropolitan Area, is a state located in the southwestern geopolitical zone of Nigeria

This webinar will cover SDG 13 in addition to SDG 3, 11, 12, 17.

Event Timing: September 16 and 17, 2021

DAY 1 – September 16, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST

Speaker 1: Michael Omoniyi Bankole, (MICCON) – Assistant Director and Head of Climate Change & Environmental Planning Department with Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.

Michael has been involved in several activities on waste management, signage and advertisement and policy formulation and development. In year 2010, he was a field officer in the National programme on the National Field Inventory of the Nigeria – Africa Stockpile Programme sponsored by CIDA and FAO. The programme took him across the country identifying and taking stocks of expired and obsolete chemical and equipment. In the last 6 years, Bankole has been working in the climate change sector. Bankole in his capacity as the head of the then climate change unit of the Ministry was appointed as the C40
Focal Point for Lagos State.

Topic: Surmounting the challenges faced by developing economies to develop an effective climate action plan

Speaker 2: Maximus Ugwuoke,, Environmental Resources Management – Lagos City Advisor, C40 Cities

Maximus is the C40 City Advisor to Lagos where he is providing technical assistance to the City’s Political Leadership and relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies to facilitate the delivery of Climate Action Plan (CAP) in line with the Paris agreement. He recently delivered on this role leading to the Launch of Lagos CAP in a colourful State Ceremony changing his focus to statewide implementation around vertical integration and mainstreaming. He is also the former HOD, Environmental Planning and Climate Change, Lagos State Government.

DAY 2 – September 17, 11:00 – 12:00 PM EST

Speaker : Daniel Bede O’ Connor, Founder and Head of Happiness at Warp-It, United Kingdom.

Warp-It is an asset reuse network which makes it easy for organisations to procure or give away surplus items, within their organisation and beyond. The platform improves sustainability and collaboration, whilst reducing waste and unnecessary purchasing. Daniel’s main focus is on the Circular Economy, specifically extending the lifespan of products. However more recently (with the increased time pressure of Climate Emergency) his focus has moved to other areas where he can help expedite sustainability.
